1. What is a printer, fax or toner cartridge?
A printer cartridge is the device that supplies a computer printer or fax machine with its ink or toner supply. Cartridges are divided into two separate types. Inkjet Cartridges contain liquid ink and are used in computer printers and fax machines. They are small cube-like devices that have to be changed when they run out of liquid ink. The other type of cartridge is the Laser Toner Cartridge. It is much larger and heavier than an inkjet cartridge, and it contains black and/or colored powder, known as toner. We only buy inkjet cartridges.
2. Why do the empty cartridges have a recycling value?
Computer printer manufacturers used the "Gillette Theory" of marketing, which is, "give the razor away for free and charge handsomely for the frequently used razor blades." In other words, sell the consumer the computer printer for $99.00 or less, and charge them up to $40.00 for the replacement ink cartridge.
It did not take long for entrepreneurs to come up with the idea of refilling the empty cartridges and selling them back to the consumer for 40% to 70% less than the O.E.M. cartridges. Thus the recharger industry was born. There are two basic raw materials in the Recharger Industry (1) ink or toner, and (2) empty inkjet and laser cartridges. The ink can be purchased from ink supply companies, however, the empty cartridges have to be collected from the consumers and business that have the empty cartridges. Unfortunately, hundreds of millions of empty cartridges were being thrown in the trash, destined for our landfills, until cartridge recycling programs were established.
3. Do all of the cartridges have the same value?
No. Cartridges are like a commodity. Some have very high values and some cartridges have no value at all. Value is strictly dependent upon supply, demand and popularity of the cartridge. Empty Inkjet cartridges have recycling values from $0.25 cents to $6.50, while empty Laser Cartridges can range from $0.25 to as much as $20.00 each. The value of the cartridge is predicated upon how popular the cartridge is among consumers. The more popular cartridges are worth more to the remanufacturers because they sell faster. Cartridges that fit older or less popular printers and fax machines, are worth less because the demand for them is less. The value of a cartridge will fluctuate over time, especially as they become more obsolete. We must therefore reserve the right to change cartridge values from time to time as the market dictates.
4. What cartridges can I sell to you?
